The Florida Rooms
How things were soon to change! On their Easter Saturday 1965 appearance, a frightening 1700 plus crowd was packed in like Sardines to watch them, with another 500 sitting on the Aquarium steps outside. I spent the entire evening wedged in a corner about five feet from John Entwhistle’s bass stack. My teeth ached for a week and I was partially deaf in my left ear for three days. The Who regularly appeared at The Florida after they began their recording career and were looked on as one of their own by the local kids who packed the club whenever they came to Brighton. The Florida was loosely represented in The Who’s film "Quadrophenia" as the club visited by the film's Mods. The Florida never had a balcony or a neon sign outside, the stage was much smaller and the Brighton Marina (seen in the distance) during the fighting on the beach wasn’t built at the time. |
