The Essoldo Cinema

The Essoldo Cinema stood at the top end of North Street (now JJB Sports), immediately behind what was the old Regent Ballroom.

Throughout the Sixties, The Essoldo was the major venue for touring rock revue shows that were very popular at the time.

All the big name tours of the era played The Essoldo, among them Adam Faith, Dusty Springfield, Freddy & the Dreamers, The Searchers, Brian Poole & the Tremoloes, Joe Brown & the Bruvvers, Manfred Mann, the Crystals, Johnny Kidd & the Pirates, Shane Fenton & the Fentones, The Tornados, Eden Kane and Billy Fury.

All the shows were sell-outs and hugely popular.  Therefore, The Essoldo has a special place in Brighton’s rock history.
